Wound Care

Biopsy and Minor Procedures Instructions

  • If there is a bandage in place after your office visit, keep the area dry and remove the bandage in 24 hours.
  • Until the wound is healed, cleanse the area gently with regular soap and water daily.
  • Apply a thin layer of Vaseline ointment to the area, and then cover with a bandage. Change the bandage twice a day and keep it dry. If it becomes wet, change the bandage as soon as possible.
  • There may be a mild discomfort associated with the procedure. If necessary, you may take Tylenol (acetaminophen).
  • If any bleeding occurs, use a cotton ball or gauze and press firmly over the site for 15-20 minutes. Do NOT remove the pressure before 15 minutes. If the bleeding does not stop after this is repeated 2-3 times, please contact our office.
  • If irritation occurs from the bandage, please stop using the bandage, but continue applying the ointment. It is normal for the wound to be pink/red and a little tender while it is healing. If you develop pain, oozing pus, or fever, please contact our office. Increasing pain in the area after 3-4 days may be a sign of infection.
  • After 1-2 weeks, the area should be healed leaving shiny, pink skin (this may be a longer duration for lower extremities). The final cosmetic result of the scar may not be apparent for several months. This will slowly pale so you should be contacted in approximately 7-10 days with your test results.
  • If you had stitches placed: Remember to return for suture removal as directed. Typically it is around 7-10 days after the procedure.
  • We want you to have an outstanding result. If you have any questions or unexpected concerns, or if you do not receive your results in up to 2 weeks, please call the office for assistance.
